Another Saturday

Saturdays for most on base is a short day as they finish work after lunch and have the afternoon off, Saturday evening is usually a theme night where we lay the tables and a three course dinner is served with wine for those who would like it. It is the one night of the week where we dress for dinner and enjoy a relaxed evening, usually ending up in the bar.
During the afternoon weather permitting the dedicated skiers and snow boarders amongst us head up to Vals for an afternoon of recreational skiing and boarding. Some will go running or cycling on the runway, as long as there are no planes due in or out. Others will go to the gym or library, while the remainder such as the chefs, Comms, Forecasters, meteorologists and some science still have to work.
My day today started with excitement as i was told i was to stand by to be co-pilot, flying with Vicky to Coal which is a site 2 hours away where they are testing a drill for the Mars project.
I was supposed to have been doing lunch but Lewis had my shift covered and I was good to go.
Unfortunately, there was a bit of miscommunication and I didn't get to go. I did get a better deal though and will be given the chance to get out into the field for a couple of days soon. Watch this space!

This was me in the field last season, on the Larson

Not flying gave me the opportunity to do my laundry and give my pit room a good clean, as i am now sharing a room with Ben the wintering electronics engineer. As i wasn't expected to work it was good to get out and about in such nice weather, especially while people were still working before lunch. It was great to see a team of diggers outside Admirals House clearing snow from our windows.

I could watch this all day

View from my window to the South

View from my window to the North

A great job of clearing all that snow, not only makes it easier to get round camp but i have my view of Fuchs House back. It's not a bad place to live at all.

It doesn't take long for clothes to dry down here

Laundry Rules

Always nice to climb into clean fresh sheets

 All tidied away

Bathroom clean and tidy

We don't really have to endure a lot of discomfort to live here not on base anyway, we don't do too badly!

These next two pictures are of a couple of posters my Mum and Sister sent me for Christmas. I wanted a poster of a woodland for my room. With no greenery down here i thought it would be a good idea to have a bit of colour to look at through the winter.  These posters are of Bluebell woods in the Outwoods of Beacon hill near my village in Leicestershire.
My sister passed away 6 months ago and my Dad passed away 17 years ago, these woods are where we scattered their ashes planted oak trees and have a bench in their names. This was a great gift and has pride of place on my wall and the bottom of my bed.
Thanks Mum and Susie, it's like looking out of the window

Finally to Saturday night and the theme is NOT 'Nudity' ........ The notice board in the dining room is for any one that needs to give information or messages of thanks etc..
This message actually said, "The fancy dress theme: NATIVITY" But in true Rothera style it got changed..  Should be an interesting night! I will keep you posted.
