With broken planes going nowhere, poor weather conditions keeping them grounded and still 80 plus on base to feed, it goes without saying that our food supplies are limited.
With no ship any day soon, it has been the ideal time to move what food we have from the food bays in Old Bransfield House to the kitchens in New Bransfield House.
All food on base is distributed between three main areas Old Bransfield House, where all the food bays are filled with the dry goods, New Bransfield House which is where our kitchens are and Fuchs, which is the building used by the field guides for all out door gear and equipment. This is where we keep the freezers that store all our meat, fish, vegetables and dairy.
We keep food separated in different areas in case we were to lose one of the buildings. In such an emergency we would not lose all the food.
The main kitchen is in New Bransfield and has a large walk in fridge, a large walk in freezer and a fair sized dry store, this is kept full of the foods that we use on a daily basis.
As we get low we have a big food move, usually on a Friday at scrub out, which is when everyone on base is allocated a job for an hour from 5pm to 6pm just before dinner. This a weekly deep clean for the base where everything from boot rooms, corridors, laundry, bar and public areas get a good clean.
Scrub out also includes big food moves where we are given a number of bodies and machinery to haul the heavy stuff up to the kitchen. Below are a few pictures of our last food move.

With most of the food bays in Old Bransfield nearly empty, we now know what we are working with and how much we have to spare. It is good in one way as we have freed up space in order to re stock once the ship gets to us, but it's not looking good for certain items that we are very low on.
We were told at sit rep this week that the ship will not be coming in until the middle of January, this means that we are now having to hold certain items back for use at Christmas. We have managed to get 200 kg of freshies from the Falklands, flown in on the Dash, which is not much in the grand scheme of things. It does mean that we will have fresh potatoes for Christmas.
